Call for Papers – Open Access und Geisteswissenschaften

In den Geisteswissenschaften stellen Monographien und Sammelbände die zentralen Publikationsformen und damit Medien für die Wissenschaftskommunikation dar. Als problematisch erweist sich dabei der lange Weg von der textlichen Fixierung der Erkenntnis bis zur Publikation. Dadurch wird die Kommunikation verzögert. Die Erkenntnis befindet sich in einer Zwischenphase, in der sie nicht zitierbar und daher kaum im Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Standards weiter verarbeitet werden kann.

Elektronische Publikationsumgebungen können diesen zeitlichen Abstand zwischen dem Verfassen des Manuskriptes und der Publikation deutlich verkürzen. Erprobt ist das Verfahren u.a. mit den Preprint-Servern in STM-Disziplinen. Jedoch sind diese Formen des elektronischen Publizierens weitgehend auf die Praxen der Wissenschaftskommunikation in diesen Wissenschaftsfeldern ausgerichtet. Die im Argument und der textlichen Ausführung davon völlig verschiedene Diskurspraxis der Geisteswissenschaften lässt sich in diesen Strukturen bisher nur mangelhaft abbilden.

Dies betrifft in gewisser Weise auch den Open Access-Gedanken an sich. Die Publikationsform der Monographie stellt andere Anforderungen als der elektronische Aufsatz. Inwieweit sich das Medium e-Book an dieser Stelle als Lösung erweist, ist bislang völlig offen.

Eine Grundfrage ist, inwieweit sich die Wissenschaftspraxis der Geisteswissenschaften in elektronische Publikationsmodelle, die aus einem anderen disziplinären Umfeld stammen, anpassbar sind und angepasst werden sollten.

Eine zweite Grundsatzfrage weist in die andere Richtung: Wie müssen elektronische Publikationsumgebungen beschaffen sein, damit sie die entsprechenden Formen der Wissenschaftskommunikation adäquat abbildbar machen?

Es lässt sich schließlich fragen, inwieweit die Entwicklung zur „E-Science“ für die Geisteswissenschaften überhaupt notwendig oder erstrebenswert ist.

LIBREAS sucht wie üblich gern kontroverse Beiträge, die sich mit diesen und auch gern verwandten Fragen hinsichtlich der Conditio geisteswissenschaftlicher Wissenschaftskommunikation im Zeitalter elektronischer Publikationen befassen.

Call for Papers – Open Access and Humanities

Within humanities, much academic work is published in printed monographies and anthologies. But this kind of scholarly communication has proved to be particularly problematic: the publishing process seems to be too time-consuming and prevents several work to be discussed until it is printed.

Electronic publication environments may reduce time between writing a manuscript and the final publication. For instance, many academic publications in science, technology, and medicine are found on pre-print servers which are considered to be the new primary source. In the view of scholars from humanities, this praxis lacks correspondence with their needs. Epistemic access to the phenomena differ between the disciplines and so does the way of thinking and arguing that has, in turn, consequences for academic publications.

There are at least two ways how to understand the differences. One is that electronic publishing is per se not suitable to the humanities. Reading an article on the screen or an ebook on a reader may cause a loss of tactility and aesthetics which is required for the discourse in humanities. Others are more cautious about the benefits and limits and discuss the consequences in terms of access, quality, integrity and storage.

In our next issue, we are inviting to discuss whether humanities shall follow the new academic publication process in science, technology and medicine and how it shall be done.

How shall an electronic publication platform be designed in order to meet the key requirements of humanities scholars? What will be the role of publishers and Peer-Reviewing?

At last, to what extent may „E-Science“ be a promising option for humanities at all?
